Road accident claims one
ITANAGAR, Jan 18: One Tarh Yate, a resident of Naharlagun was crushed to death when she came under the back tyre of a truck this morning at Jully road, Papum Hapa. The incident occurred around 9 am in the morning. According to police source, she was pillion riding in a scooty at the time of the incident.
When contacted Naharlagun police station officer in charge K Pait informed that a case has been registered in this regard and driver of the truck has been arrested.

Third State Level Teacher Eligibility Test held
ITANAGAR, Jan 18: The third State Level Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) has been conducted by the Directorate of Elementary Education, Govt of Arunachal Pradesh at four different centers of Itanagar, namely, DNG College, Govt HSS, Arunodaya HSS and Kingcup Public School today. 85 per cent of the total 3103 registered candidates took part in the test which ended peacefully under the strict supervision of APTET director along with Magistrate, Observer, Centre Superintendant and police personnel.

NAHARLAGUN, Jan 18: Mother’s Home in Lekhi Village received a pleasant surprise today with the visit of members of the Itanagar Buddhist Cultural Society (IBCS), followed by another visit from NERIST faculty members Raju Barthakur and Ajay Dharma.

The decomposed body of two fully grown elephants was found on Saturday by a team of EDC members of Mebo area, who have been associated with the forest department for protection of wildlife in the area.
The EDC members, following a tip off from local villagers, searched for the elephant
carcasses in the deep natural forest near Siluk village and recovered two decomposed
bodies in close stretch aside Ngopok-
The local people of Mebo said that herd of elephants from Poba Reserve Forest and Daying Ering Wildlife Sanctuary often arrives at Siluk area during December every year. According to them, there may be more elephant carcasses inside the dense jungle of the area. The villagers, who do not wish to be named, say that a number of tuskers that entered in the area were killed by the poachers during the last few years. The villagers doubt presence of a wild organelle trader and elephant illegal catcher in the area.
The recent incidents of unabated killing and catching of wild pachyderms in Mebo jungles has created strong concern among the members of State Wildlife Board (SWB) and EDC. They have criticized the territorial forest department for its alleged ‘inactive role’ in protection of the wildlife and other forest resources in the area. “The forest department officials in the district are quite indifferent towards protection of the wild beast in the reserve forests and adjacent natural forests. Though there is a CCF office at Pasighat and sufficient manpower in the department, yet the department miserably fails to protect wild lives and other forest wealth of the area. I fervently appeal to the higher ups of the state forest authority to depute Wildlife Crime Bureau officials for investigation of the wildlife crimes registered under the division’, said SWB member John Apum.
Apum, who is also a member of Arunachal State Biodiversity Board, urged the forest authority for posting of officials of Tiger Protection Force for guarding strayed tigers in the area.
10th National Youth weightlifting championship

ITANAGAR, Jan 18: The medal haul by the Arunachalee weightlifters at 10th National Youth weightlifting championship, Yamuma Nagar, Haryana has further increased to 18 with current Asian Youth Champion Lalu Taku winning 3 Gold medals for Arunachal Pradesh in 69 kg weight category.
He lifted Snatch of 110 Kg, Clean & Jerk 140 Kg and Total of 250 Kg.
With Taku’s winning performance, the medal tally has reached 18 with 8 Gold, 7 Silver and 3 Bronze.
In 50kg boys category, Gungte Yangfo has won two golds and one silver.
In 56 Kg boys, Jimjang Deru has captured 3 gold. In the same category, Dambi Umpe won three bronze medals.
Yukar Tachak has won three silvers medals in 62 KG boy while in 69 KG boys category Lalu taku has clinched three gold.
While, in 44 Kg Girls, Tang Devi won three silver medals, according to Daniel Teli, General Secretary, Arunachal Weightlifting Association.
Saddled Government schools and teachers look for tangible state and public support

ITANAGAR, Jan 18: With the opening of the large number of private schools in Arunachal Pradesh, many thought that government schools will lose its significance. However, the government schools especially those located in interior areas still continue to attract large number of students belonging to the poor economic background. Government schools including those funded under SSA, RMSA, etc are giving quality education to the students despite all the obstacles.
Despite contributing to the development of education sector, still government schools especially those run by SSA are vilified by the people of Arunachal. In fact SSA teachers are often blamed, for the poor education scenario for no fault of theirs. In spite of dedicatedly performing their duties, often they get ridiculed by the members of the society.
“I started working under SSA from the year 2006. I am still posted at interior place and am contributing my bit for the society. However, sometimes we are discriminated just because we are not regular teacher. That time we feel extremely sad and get disheartened. To make matter worse we don’t get salary on time,” shared an SSA teacher.

“20 years ago, I came to the Arunachal to find job but after joining education department and working closely with the tribal children, I fell in love with this state. At that time, situation was tough and despite difficult condition, I saw so much enthusiasm among children to get education. Local people inspired us,” shared B Prasad, a native of Agra who currently teaches Hindi at govt. middle school, Poma.
He further added, “I have worked for 9 years at remote Damin village under Kurung Kumey district. There was so much of enthusiasm among children and parents. Today some of my students have become doctors, engineers and some successful businessman. It feels great to see young children, who got education in government schools, are doing so well in their life.”
However there are some teachers who believe that with the change of time, the government schools also need to uplift themselves. “No doubt things are better now in compare to the past. But still government school lacks in many areas while compared with privately funded schools. There is urgent need for image makeover. Due to the bad image about govt. schools, many parents prefer to get their children educated from private schools,” told a teacher on condition of anonymity. Further he added that misuse of fund along with political interference in transfer and posting of teachers are some of the major reasons for pathetic condition of govt. schools.
“Unless and until political interference ends, we can never achieve the dream of good education system. Sometimes even better performing teachers become victim of politicians, as they get transferred out from their school, so that those loyal to the local MLAs can take their seat,” he continued.
There is no doubt that despite flooding of private schools, still large number of children especially those hailing from poor background look upto government schools to get education. For them, government schools still continue to be the place where they hope to weave a dream for better future. The onus lies on education department to ensure that those small dreams don’t die a cruel death.

At a time when Arunachal is reeling under high corruption, Government apathy, demand for suspension of government officials and accusations and counter accusations between organisations, here’s a story for a change which is a welcome breather indeed. While the woods are lovely, dark and deep and all lazy government officials asleep, here are a handful of neo government officials of Soi and Gori (Basar), with a vision and a mission.
They have taken it upon themselves to come together and synergise their energy, knowledge and experience towards change in the society and help in gainful employment of the unemployed rather than wait for government aid and intervention. They work under the banner Gumin Rego Kilaju (GRK). It was set on 5th December’2012 and their current area of focus is their hometown of Soi and Gori (Basar), but they are hopeful that it would eventually spread to all the other districts of Arunachal. I wouldn’t be surprised if it did given the rapid progress it has made in such a short span of time.
These Government Officials make use of their holidays and get together to put their thoughts into practise. So far they have constructed many low cost eco friendly toilets, drains along with venue plantations and about 5000 fingerlings have been distributed(something that most depend on for livelihood) and conducted AIDS awareness and counselling programmes and most recently the Gori football tournament.
These officials believe, in the collaboration of Positive minds for social growth. They try and touch all aspects affecting a citizen. From inducing behavioural change, discipline, better education (counselling, incentivising performance, support tuition, facilitate library), economic and combined growth, sports promotion (talent search, coaching, logistic support), social reforms (discourage distinction on family clan basis, do away with excessive and irrelevant taboos and other social malice), promote tourism, among others. They especially focus on the youths and teach the ethics of hard work and dedication, respecting elders, young ones and outsiders alike.
They seek each ones participation, which I think they have achieved. From Young to old and from a Politician, Chief Engineer to a farmer, everyone can be seen enthusiastically participating in the vision of these government officials. Looking at these people, it’s evident that all that these people needed was a bit of support and guidance contrary to the often held excuse that people in Arunachal had neither the ethics nor the will to change their lifestyle.
Go to Basar, not a single piglet would be seen wondering about freely in Soi and Gori land. It has become open defecation free and clean environment is the order of the day. One of their aims was to make Basar a tourist spot and I can already see that happening soon. (The contributor is a State Consultant with PHED, Govt of Arunachal)

Delhi High Court on Friday said the government had “not acted so fast” when it came to the security of their own citizens. Justice Badar Durrez Ahmed and Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva made the remark while hearing a plea that 15,000 CCTV cameras installed for the Obama visit should not be removed after Republic Day. Even after series of crime incidents rocked national capital, the government never took such drastic measures. Infact government of India should learn something from visiting US president. The Americans give top priorities to the security of their citizens and spends huge amount of money for it. However in India VVIP and VIP securities are given more priority than that of the ordinary citizen.

Pros and cons of prepaid metres

A lot is being heard in state capital about installation of prepaid power meter and public opposition over the issue. While it is a welcome step taken by the concerned department, there is immaturity in the action to a certain extent.
The power department has miserably failed to generate awareness amongst the general public regarding the prepaid meter and its benefits. The department has been time and again stating that it will stop power theft which is nothing but false. I wonder how a simple installation of prepaid meter is going to help them in stopping power pilferage. Power thieves have various ways & means to steal power free of cost. It is the duty of the power department to conduct regular patrolling to stop such activities. Prepaid meter is nothing but an energy meter that allows power supply as long as there is balance in your account. It works in the same way as that of prepaid SIM card of mobile network. It will help the department in timely collection of revenue and maintain account without any outstanding revenue.
On the other hand, the consumers have valid reasons for fear and apprehension but they are on the wrong track. To say that it is anti poor is a seriously misplaced statement emerging from the protestor’s end. In fact, poor people are the regular payer of revenue for fear of disconnection but not the rich and influential lot. Terming the prepaid meter as anti poor will send a wrong message to the world that poor people in Arunachal are tax evaders. There is no concessional power tariff for poor. Poor and rich are paying tariff at the equal rate.
The main question is whether the department is fully prepared and equipped to deal with the outcome of this new project? What if, the balance is exhausted after office hour or on holidays? Don’t say that one should be careful about it! Most us who use prepaid mobile have experienced network disconnection at the middle of an important conversation due to zero balance; it is a regular occurrence in every household that your servant tells you in the morning, “madam chai patti nehi he, madam namak nehi he, madam chawal nehi he” and so on. It is very irritating but true for every household.
The department should open recharge facilities in every important locations for the convenience of the consumers. Online payment facility should be extended to internet users before installation of prepaid power meter.

Arunachal’s Got Talent
Dear Editor,
Through your esteem daily, I would like to share about Arunachal’s Got Talent with a tag line “Hunar ki Khoj”.
It is indeed an innovative initiation to organize such an internationally acclaimed talent hunt. This will certainly play a significant role in exposing the hidden talent of many.
But I was left confused because of an ordeal! A young boy came to me, holding a Card
certifying him to be a contestant of Arunachal Got Talent 2015. The boy tried to
convince me to buy a vote @ Rs. 50/-
One question that came to my mind was how do I give him cash to buy vote without ever seeing his performance? Is there no other way to vote without paying cash and giving extra pressure to the contestant? The format of the show seems to be 180 degree opposite to the original!
The format of the Talent show was conceived and created by Simon Cowell in UK in 2005, and was telecast in ITV Channel. But, it was changed to America’s Got Talent resulting to first full format of the show in 2006 and was telecast in channel NBC by FrementalMedia. In India it was adopted in June 2009 and gained popularity all over the country with its first season winner Prince Dance Group. So on many northeastern contestants have been represented in IGT.
Henceforth, this is an appeal to the organizing committee of the Arunachal Got Talent to have proper system in place so that the contestants do not beg for cash for vote in order to survive in the show. The organizing committee should come up with better ideas for voting through SMSs.

Dear Editor,
I would like to express my view about the prepaid electric meter in AP. It has proven to be an effective technology theoretically and practically in developed nations. But, with the background of the inefficient practices of the past in AP and other Indian states, it has lots of resistance. It is normal for every new technology to face resistance. Computers, ATMs, Internet etc faced lots of resistance, but with time people have accepted them. Likewise it is normal that the people of AP and other states are resisting the prepaid electric meter system. In order for the GoAP to impress the people of AP to accept it, the GoAP should first implement it in all the government offices and quarters. It would be a living witness for the people who visit the offices to accept them in their homes. Without such an approach the project would die a premature death, even if the technology is super brilliant. The departments of GoAP should first show the cost savings achieved by their offices due to electric meters over two to five years and then it would be very easy for people to accept the technology.
